Having recently laid my father-in-law to rest, I have been reflecting on the state of my soul. We were at his bedside as he passed, the first time I have been in that position, with the priest. He received the Anointing of the Sick, Apostolic Pardon and we prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet as he left this world. My faith tells me he is in God’s arms now. What a blessing for him!
This may not be the case for all of us. Many die tragically or alone and the priest or loved ones are not there. They do not receive the Sacraments or prayers. So it makes me take a pause and reflect on the state of my soul.
I think there is a common misconception that if you are a “good person” you go to heaven. I think there are “good people” who go to Hell! We have no guarantees of anything in this life or the next. So, it is crucial that we are vigilant in our care of our souls. Scripture tells us we will not know the day or the hour. What if it was today? What if it is while you are reading this?
I think we need to pray often for God’s mercy. I like the Jesus prayer….”Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner”, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary. But it is also crucial to take account of ourselves every day (examination of conscience) and go to confession frequently. I like to think we will all see each other in heaven but the reality is there is no guarantee. So, remain vigilant so that one day that can be a reality!
“If we were to die now, what would happen to us? What account should we give of the many riches, graces, and companions left to perish through our means?” (St. Ignatius of Loyola)
