When it comes to our faith, we do many things in the spirit of piety and worship. But why do we do these things? I tend to always be questioning matters of spirituality to understand more deeply. Some may take these questions as a challenge and become defensive. But real questioning for the sake of better understanding and a deepening of faith is not a challenge to the correctness of a thing but rather an invitation to look at it deeper and embrace it more.
How well do we understand the Mass? There are many resources to look deeper. I fear that often we do not understand it enough. What about the Eucharist? It is clear by the lack of attendance at Adoration there is a lack of true understanding. This rings true with all the sacraments. And what about prayer? If we do not understand prayer at a deeper level, are we not susceptible to having prayer turn into a rote exercise or fall into something of a superstitious nature?
As men, we need to constantly challenge ourselves to grow in our spiritual life. We need to lead the charge in understanding and loving our Catholic faith. As we deepen this understanding and love we will grow spiritually, and we will find that we trust and rely on the Church more in every aspect of our life. If we understand well, we will be more convicted in our belief and trust in the Sacraments more. This will empower us to be bold leaders in our faith, families and communities.
We need to start asking ourselves why. We need to start asking ourselves how much we really trust.
