DON’T KEEP IT A SECRET!

Men have been known to keep things from others. To keep it a “secret”. I immediately think of hunting spots or our best fishing holes. We got to keep that close to the breast! Well, do we really have to be that way? Probably not. When it comes to our faith…definitely not!

Take prayer for example. We can take time to be with God in prayer. It can be a daily practice and in itself extremely good. But if we do not take the fruits of that prayer to others or share with others how important prayer is in our lives then we have diminished the power of prayer.

The same can be said about the Eucharist. We can be self-absorbed in receiving at Mass or being before the Blessed Sacrament at Adoration, or we can share with others the importance of the Eucharist in our life and why we receive as often as possible and why we try to visit with Christ in Adoration whenever we can.

Hopefully we all read scripture and writings of the saints and the Church. This can be stored up for personal information or we can use it to teach others and spread the Gospel truths. If we keep it all to ourselves…..we cheat others and ultimately ourselves! “give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” (Luke 6:38) So share that knowledge and insight with others whenever possible.

For generations, men have passed on trades, wisdom, faith, etc. It is a natural thing to do. Sadly, I see less and less of it happening today. As men we have to be good teachers. It is part of providing. In our homes, the children will follow the lead of the father in matters of faith. “Train up a child in the way that he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) How are we going to lead? “The speed of the leader determines the pace of the pack.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Let’s share and lead in all haste!

Our faith is a GIFT, make no mistake about it! Don’t keep it a secret. Share it with others. Share your story and what your faith means to you. Most of all share the good news of Jesus in the Eucharist. So many people, Catholics included, do not fully understand what we have here and how important it is to the salvation of our souls. “So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20)

We do not have to beat people over the head. We do not need to be annoying. We simply need to live a life in Christ and be willing to share what we have been blessed with. We need to inform and teach and bring others to Christ. As husbands and fathers we need to help get our wives and children to heaven. We can’t do that through bad example. We can’t do that with a closed mouth. We can’t keep our faith a secret! “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
