HOW DEEP IS OUR BELIEF?

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

We believe in God. We put our trust in him and know that we are dependent on him. But how deep is that trust or belief? Is it beyond description and part of who we are, or is it just enough to make us “feel good”. The kind of faith we need to foster is one which looks almost reckless or ridiculous. I think of the example given by the centurion in Luke’s gospel (Luke 7:1-10). He was so strong in his belief in Jesus, that he simply asked him to “say the word, and let his servant be healed.” This is expectant faith! This is how deep our belief should run and how we should approach prayer.

Every prayer is answered. We may not understand the answer, but God’s ways are not our ways. We are too used to controlling things and seeing immediate results and satisfaction. God is timeless and he does things according to his will. So perhaps we could pray with an expectant faith, knowing that God will provide, and also unify our will to his so as not to be anxious? God is like the air I breath. I do not see it, but I can’t live without it. I never worry if the oxygen is there, I simply breath it in. Likewise, we breath in God, the creator of all, including the air. Without him we cannot live.

I pray we all have such a faith in God that regardless of our circumstance, be it joy, sorrow, hardship or abundance, to know that God has provided and will provide. No matter what is happening it is God’s will; if we have our trust in him. When our trust is outside of him and in ourselves, others or things of the world, we are in a dangerous place. “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” (Psalm 118:8-9)

Trust in God. Pray to him with an expectant faith. Accept his will for your life. Share him with others so they too can enjoy real peace. I share here some words that help me when I tend to start letting my trust wane…..

Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing frighten you.
All things pass away.
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
They who have God
lack nothing.
God alone is enough.
(St. Teresa of Avila)
