CHOOSE WISELY

Who are our friends? What relationships do we keep? Are any of them Christ-centered? The term, friend, has become very watered down. I would posit that most people have very few, if any real friends.

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” (Proverbs 17:17) So, our friends should be our brothers and sisters in Christ. Many times, we feel obligated to family for being our closest relationships. This can be the case, but it is not a given. The most valued relationships will be those founded on our Catholic beliefs. This is where we will find the support and encouragement to run the race well. “Every day, as long as this today lasts, keep encouraging one another.” (Hebrews 3:13)

Do not be duped by the world. It does not matter how many Facebook friends you have, how many followers on social media you have or how popular you are. These are worldly relations, and they are fleeting and dangerous. “Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4)

Take time to assess your relationships. Who do you call friends that are really not friends but maybe only friendly acquaintances? Who really, is your brother or sister? Those who support your journey of faith are true friends, brothers, and sisters. Who are those people in your life? We only have one shot at salvation. We will not get a do-over. So, we must be careful of where we spend our time and who we spend it with. “He who walks with wise men becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” (Proverbs 13:20)

Choose wisely. Your salvation depends upon it!
