WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?

Common sense will cause us to expect the outcomes of most actions. This is usually based upon knowledge. If we throw a stone into the water, we expect a splash. If we touch something hot, we expect to feel a burn. And in life, we come to expect the actions of those who love us. As a child we look to our parents to nurture and love us. As adult we would expect the same from our spouse.

So, what do we expect from God? It may seem at first to be a rather conceited attitude. But is it? Christ himself, told us to be expectant in prayer. “Therefore I tell you, whatever you as in prayer, believe that you will receive it, and you will.” (Mark 11:24) It is our belief that makes all the difference. Even if we “know” this scripture, do we “believe” it?

To know is to have facts and evidence about something and being able to prove it. To believe is to be convicted to something, even in the absence of evidence and holding it as true. Where are we when it comes to prayer?

God will provide. We simply need to ask! My father used to tell me that if you don’t ask, the answer is always, “NO”. Go to God in prayer, expecting He will answer, and committed to accepting the answer. “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock and it will opened to you. For every one who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)

As we pray our Rosary, have that same belief that Our Blessed Mother will take our petitions to her son, and they will be listened to. Who better to knock on our behalf than her?! Let our prayers be the very essence of who we are – the created who are wholly dependent on the Creator.

“He who trusts in himself is lost. He who trusts in God can do all things. What does is cost us to say, ‘My God help me!’ Is there anything easier than this? And this little will suffice to save us if we be diligent in doing it.” (St. Alphonsus Liguori)
