TEMPERANCE MAKES LIFE BETTER

It is in the practice of temperance that we can grow in meekness. We know from the Beatitudes that both are important to our spiritual life. As men, at least for me, this meekness thing can be a little bit of a stumbling block. I mean…. the whole idea of being submissive! That is not really a quality I was taught to be tantamount to manhood as a boy growing up! It was more of being independent, the self-made man.

But as I have grown in my faith, I have come to take a different look at it. I know that NOBODY is self-made or independent. I recognize it as not being submissive to the world but being submissive to God and his will. It is actually a sign of strength in putting full faith and trust in God and acknowledging that without the Creator, I, the created, am nothing!

So, I challenge us to think about this and grow in temperance and meekness. Watch our activities and grow in the likeness of Christ.

Be careful in our speech. The tongue can be a vicious thing. “Set guard over my mouth, O Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips!” (Psalm 414:3)

Be patient with others and kind as Christ is. “I, therefore, a prisoner of the Lord, beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3)

Be firm in our trust in God and know that being a man of virtue is better than all the riches promised by the world. Let us be truly wise. “Who is wise among you? By his good life let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where jealousy and self-ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity. And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3:13-18)

May our Blessed Mother intercede for us, that we become good and righteous men.
