“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-14)
How bright and salty are we men? This seems to be a pretty direct command from Jesus. Most of the time, the world does want to see our light or taste our salt. So, we end up being salty and bright mostly around those who are already on board with our beliefs. But this is not what we are called to do. We are called to go and make disciples. The only way to do that is by our witness to our faith. And if you think about it, the greatest disciples in our Church history came from those who were converted, not from the converted. So we must be that voice in the desert and bring people to know the truth of our Catholic faith.
For myself, I will admit that the saltiness is diminished, and the light burns dim at times. However, I do think we can revive that saltiness and put in some new batteries to get that light burning bright! PRAYER! Take this to prayer and ask God to help make us better workers in his vineyard. Time in adoration will prove to accomplish this. Sit quietly with the Lord and listen. He always speaks to us. SCRIPTURE! Take time to read what truths Jesus has revealed to us. See how we are called, and how we are to respond. Learn how to be a do-it-now Catholic. LIVES OF THE SAINTS! Read and understand how the greatest figures in our Faith responded to God and how they dealt with the same struggle we face today.
We will always be a work in progress. This world is nothing more than a place of preparation for the world to come. But let us purposefully work, so as not to be found too wanting on the last day. We strive to be the best in our jobs, relationships, hobbies, etc. Let us strive to be the absolute best in the presence of God. A really tough challenge, but worth all the work. And let us share that with others and bring them to the same place.
“They who want to win the world for Christ must have the courage to come into conflict with it.” (St. John Vianney)
