There is a tendency to spin facts to suit a specific message. Hence, tampering with the truth. So, in a sense, lying. This is all too prevalent in the news media. But it is also much too commonplace among everyone. There is an inherent danger in seeing the world through the glasses of our own predispositions and preferences.
How often have we heard the people say that something is “their truth”? Wow! So now we can have multiple truths? A truth to fit every mood and occasion? I do not mean to sound snarky, but this is ridiculous. It takes courage and work to accept the truth about things and align ourselves with it. It also brings with it the possibility of rejection or ridicule. So, I suppose it can be easier and more convenient to rationalize our way to a new-found truth. A truth that is more palatable.
I would submit to you that there is only one truth, which all of humanity hinges upon and which we are to protect and share with others. That truth is our Lord Jesus Christ. We are plainly told this. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) The things of this world are temporary and not worth stressing over. The things of Christ are. The things we find in Sacred Scripture are what we are to be sharing with the world. This is the truth and anything contrary to it is just a lie. If we are contrary to it, we damn ourselves before God. “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight” (Proverbs 12:20)
We are all called to be missionary disciples. We need to bring others to Christ. Not just get them to church, but to encounter Jesus and have a personal relationship with him to be able to go out and bring others to him. Our truth must be Jesus…in our thoughts, in our words, in our deeds, in our prayers. This will be how we are measured. “For he will render to every man according to his works.” (Romans 2:6)
Our time on earth is to prepare for heaven. It is also to help others prepare for heaven. Christ, who is truth, gave us the Church. We have the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Share it! Live by it! Make no mistake, we will be judged! “The Lord preserves all who love him; but all the wicked he will destroy.” (Psalm 145:20)
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph…pray for us!
“No one should follow what he considers to be good for himself, but rather what seems good for another. Let them put Christ before all else; and may he lead us all to everlasting life.” (St. Benedict)
