Life will be what we perceive it to be. It is all about our perspective. The challenge is what will form our perspective. The word comes from the Latin word perspicere, which means to look through or beyond.
Would we have this shaped by the world or by God? I would hope we all agree it is best formed by God. And how should we accomplish this? I humbly submit that it is done through our prayer life. Prayer is not to be discounted. It is at the very core of who we are, yet often we neglect it. We are told to pray at all times! “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Jesus Christ for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Prayer keeps our focus on the things of God, not of man. So as a result, our perspective becomes formed by God and NOT by man.
Our devotion to the Rosary is a powerful way of changing our perspective and influencing our life. “No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary.” (Bishop Hugh Doyle)
The game changer in this quest for a holy perspective can be found in Mass and Adoration. Going to daily Mass whenever possible and making a Holy Hour regularly will guide us in the way of the Lord and lead us to a God-formed perspective.
I have noticed a change in perspective because of this. The situations I have found myself in have been handled differently. The perspective I had a few years ago would have me in a fit when some things went wrong. Now I am more inclined to see the blessings even in the “bad” things that happen. This is because the “bad” as it seems to be is a perspective formed by the world and not by God. God created everything. God is good. So, all is a blessing, and we should be thankful. “And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return; the Lord gave , and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21)
Pray, so as not to react according to the flesh, but of the soul. A perspective on life well formed through prayer by God will lead us to behave differently…in a better way. We will find that this will also prove to be a very powerful witness to our Faith, as well as keeping our blood pressure down! “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
“You will never be happy if your happiness depends on getting solely what you want. Change the focus. Get a new center. Will what God wills, and your joy no man shall take from you.” (Venerable Fulton J. Sheen)
