I have always tried to be a “do it now” person and encourage others to do the same. Too many times we do not do things simply because we put them off. They become something in the back of our mind that end up falling by the wayside.
In the second Joyful mystery of the Rosary, the Visitation, we ponder our Blessed Mother’s response to God’s call. “In those days Mary arose and went with all haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the child leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”” (Luke 1:39-42) When Mary heard about God’s will from the angel and learned about Elizabeth, she answered the call to serve. She did not think about it, take some time to sleep on it, try to figure everything out or understand God’s will. She just accepted and acted – in all haste!
This is an example of how to live for and serve God. “I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. When I think of your ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; I hasten and do not delay keeping your commandments.” (Psalms 119:58-60) We know that we are instructed how to live, in the Scriptures. One only need to sit with the Bible and prayerfully ponder what is written. But that is not enough! We are fed spiritually at Mass, hearing the Word of God proclaimed and expounded upon by the priest. But that is not enough! We must take this and do something about it. We must live what we read and are taught. This is the only way to truly serve God. Our faith is not static, it is dynamic. “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)
If we are asked to pray for someone, do it right away….do it now. If our hearts are moved to do something, do it right away…do it now. If we think we should visit someone and spend time with them, do it right away….do it now. Do not wait. Do it now! Do it now! Do it now!
“ Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17) This scripture should be enough to get us to change any lazy habits. The sin of omission will sneak up on us and even if we are unaware, we will be called to answer for them all. Pray for Mary’s intercession to be more aware of what God’s will is in our life and to respond in all haste.
Be a “do it now” person in all things but most importantly in matters of faith. Let us serve God well by serving one another and the Church.
“Faith in action is Love – and love in action is service” (St. Mother Theresa)
