Evading the Truth

The subject of truth has been discussed at length. It does not have to be complicated. It is either the truth, or it is not. But there have become all kinds of truths. Everyone has his own personal truth. I see it as the truth of man or the truth of God. Man’s truth is subjective. Formed by career, friendships, duty, and what the world expects; and depending on the individual interpretation, the truth varies. It comes from a secular theology, human influence, egocentricity, and void of God. The truth of God, the real and only Truth, is divine and absolute. Grounded in God who is truth itself, it is objective reality. It is independent of human opinion and perceptions. This truth is Christocentric, revealed by Christ even beyond human reason.

Subjective truth is easy because we can justify our actions. We can explain away any deficiency. Jump on the internet and you can find validation for any action or belief. This does not make it truth. We skirt God’s Truth with the false truths. We are comfortable because the world says we are right. There is a danger with the world’s truth – it is ever changing. “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 3-4) We must live out of objective truth, God’s Truth. This is where we will find the wisdom to make right decisions in life. Regardless of the promptings of the world and any material loss we may experience from going against the grain, action based on Divine Truth will bring us the greatest reward – eternal life. “Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” (Psalm 25:5)

The tragedy is that we run from the TRUTH. The only way to God’s Truth is through Scripture and prayer. The Scripture piece seems easy, but it is more involved than one might think. We do not fully receive God’s Truth through Scripture if it is not read prayerfully. And most importantly, we need to spend time with God in prayer. When we pray – talk with God, we must be open and obey, or else it is a fraud. “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithful are his delight.” (Proverbs 12:22)

Many times, we know what we are being called to do. We know what the right thing to do is or how we should act. The fact is that we understand, that in prayer, God will challenge us to live in a Godly fashion, call us out of our comfort zone, ask us to serve; can and will keep one from praying. Fear of the cost of answering God’s call will make us run from the Truth. This will lead to spiritual death. “See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.” (Hebrews 12:25)

Knowing that God is Truth, that we can not change God, we know that Truth is not able to be changed or modified. In every aspect of our life, we must invite God to be present and to guide us. All our decisions should be grounded in prayer so that our actions are out of Divine Truth. Asking God for help, for an answer, for insight, for right action, is not hard to do. The work comes when he answers. Once he speaks, we must answer in the face of all adversity. One could say it takes courage to pray if they are committed to obeying.

“No one in the world can change the Truth. What we can do and should do is to seek the Truth and serve it when we have found it.” (St. Maximillian Kolbe)
